History of the P.I.'s Types of Private Investigators P.I's in the news

Pinkerton Detective Agency is one of the most famous.

Famous National Firm

Perhaps the most famous national P.I. firm of all is Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Founded in 1850 by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton, the Pinkerton Agency was the first private detective agency in the United States. Pinkerton, the first police detective with the Chicago police department, pulled together a core of detectives that would go anywhere to find the information – and the person – for whom they were searching. The Pinkerton Agency became even more famous when Dashiell Hammet used his experiences as a Pinkerton investigator as a basis for his best selling detective books. Pinkerton provided more than just investigative services – as do most other national P.I. firms. Over the course of 150 years, Pinkerton has developed into an internationally recognized firm that provides investigative and security services to industry and individuals around the world.

No other national P.I. firm has quite the reputation or the longevity of Pinkerton National Detective Agency, and most keep a far lower profile. If you’re looking for a firm of private investigators with a national presence, one of your best resources is the National Council of Investigation and Security Services. There you’ll find a wealth of information on P.I. firms across the country. The Member’s Directory can help you find a license private investigator in your city or town, and give you the assurance that they are a licensed, reputable private detective.

Whether you need a private investigator for personal reasons, or for business reasons, a national P.I. firm may make more sense for your needs than a local solo operator. If you have investigative or security needs that require the services of a large firm, you may find that their prices are more competitive because of their access to a large number of licensed investigators in states around the entire country.
