Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Founded in 1850 by Scotsman Allan
Pinkerton, the Pinkerton Agency was the first private detective agency
in the United States. Pinkerton, the first police detective with the
Chicago police department, pulled together a core of detectives that
would go anywhere to find the information – and the person – for whom
they were searching. The Pinkerton Agency became even more famous when
Dashiell Hammet used his experiences as a Pinkerton investigator as a
basis for his best selling detective books. Pinkerton provided more than
just investigative services – as do most other national P.I. firms. Over
the course of 150 years, Pinkerton has developed into an internationally
recognized firm that provides investigative and security services to
industry and individuals around the world.
